Storybook Silhouettes, An Artisan Crafted Quilt

In the years pre-dating the invention of photography, a popular way to capture the image of a loved one was to trace their shadow by candlelight and snip it out of black paper. Certain paper-cutters became so skilled that they could sit with scissors and paper in hand and cut a profile by sight. Given a table lamp, a pal seated in profile and some construction paper it's actually a great early evening activity to experiment with.

A word to the adults:

The art of quilting is traditionally a collaborative effort and through the magic of a virtual sewing circle this one is no exception. We were introduced to the amazing applique work of Joyce Nichols in a small town and Amish settlement outside of Jamestown, MO. While Joyce typically creates applique scenes of Amish life, she kindly agreed to create quilt blocks from our design of children's silhouettes and diving swallows. An extraordinary quilter in San Jose, CA, Eli Bailey then gathered fabrics to perfectly compliment Joyce's blocks and handcrafted this elegant quilt. Its generous size and light weight allows for easy transition from crib to toddler bed, although you may likely just want to hang it on your child's wall as the focal point of their room. To properly care for your artisan crafted quilt, please dry clean only.
