"You know you're in good hands when you visit Robert Mahar's online emporium, Mahar Drygoods - good, creative crafty hands. Robert's been presenting curious, imaginative, beautiful handcrafted goods for children before the rise of Etsy and we love to visit often to see what new artists and craftspersons he's collaborating with and, more importantly, the new alluring items for offer..." His new Sunshine Swag embodies the issue: it's a kid-directed item that adults surely will co-opt for themselves. Why? Because this pretty paper garland will add cheer wherever you hang it. (Perhaps wherever you sit to pay bills?) Each 8- to 9-foot garland is composed of dozens of die-cut paper hearts, circles and flowers. They're hand-sewn in Mahar's Santa Monica studio, with grosgrain ribbon loops on both ends for easy hanging. Packaged in brightly colored paper bags that are sewn shut, these also make a great ready-to-go gift for only $12.95. Of course, you can hang it in the kids' room, too." All products that Mahar Drygoods offers are individually crafted so you can be sure that whatever you purchase it will be exclusively made for the child it is intended for because none of the items offered are mass produced." Pretty Pink Momma Blog, January 25, 2009 "Just wanted to drop you a quick email to say that my order arrived today (felt haunted house) and it is beyond what I had expected. Thank you: I am thrilled! It is not only adorable, but well-crafted, the packaging is cute, and the whole thing is just "quality." Just wanted to let you know that this is the first time I have shopped with you and I will certainly be back!" Customer comment from Sarah H., Latrobe, PA, December 20, 2008

The very first shower gift I received was a pair of those knit cowboy booties, and I am having to restrain myself from buying out the entire store on the eve of my daughter's first birthday! You make the blogosphere a lovely place to be - just wanted to say thanks!" Customer feedback from Melissa, Memphis, TN, March 4, 2008

"Everything at this imaginative, child-centric destination is carefully vetted, whether it's a strand of gingham-cloth pennants or a set of colorful, hand-crocheted doughnuts—and has an appeal that goes way beyond kids. Fittingly, the site is the creation of a former contemporary art appraiser, and a curatorial approach has been applied to the selection of the affordable, limited-edition items—many of which are Mahar-exclusive collaborations with emerging West Coast artisans."

As an early childhood educator it is getting so hard to find presents that are sturdy and well made, but are a delight to look at (mostly for the adults of course) but also wonderful props for imaginative play. When I was a child I had a small red leather traincase which I gave many years later to my goddaughter. I hope my granddaughter loves hers as much as I did mine." One Lucky Baby's new birdseed blanket is just right for the long haul. One side is a retro-feeling cotton fabric with a flock of cheerful birds perching and pecking. Flip it over and the softest chenille provides all the cozy snuggling baby needs. Choose from pink birds on a cream background with fuzzy pink backing, or bold yellow birdies backed in tan chenille. Despite its fancy handmade looks, this is one practical blankie. When baby's 'loved' it a bit too much, it goes straight into the washer and dryer. (Because even the most exquisite blanket can't soothe a tantrum if it's at the dry cleaner.) And don't be surprised when you find whatever's left of it packed up and ready for college."

January 26, 2007 "It's official. I have now added Mahar Drygoods to my "do not browse here unless you absolutely want to spend money" list. Founder, Robert Mahar, whose day job is as an appraiser of modern art in LA, has impeccable taste when it comes to selecting utterly unique "vintage and artisanal" gifts for you, your child, and also your dog. He even goes so far as to commission limited run pieces from his favorite artisans, making his collection truly rare. I've often overheard many bemoan the impersonal nature of shopping online. True if you're shopping the big congloms. But the internet can also open up the wee world of artisanal to those who may be stuck in shopping Timbuktus. Mahar Drygoods is an excellent example of an online shop that makes you feel as if you've just stumbled across a rare treasure trove in some secluded spot. Though you can't actually touch his inventory, Mahar does his best very to make you "experience" his selections with multiple photos and vivid, chatty descriptions..."

When you visit this website, you feel like you are transported -- to a wonderful vintage store where you just feel like browsing (and buying) and staying awhile. You forget that you are at home -- what every site hopes to achieve. Every time I go here I find myself talking to myself -- "oooh, I like this -- no, but look at this!" This site Must be shared with all! " Lena's Notebook, September, 2006 "I received my order today and I’m so pleased! The towel is much better quality (and a bigger size) than I anticipated (what a great value!), and “brown paper packages tied up with string” are a few of my favorite things. ;) The handwritten note and little button were such nice touches— I’ll be shopping with you again and again and am happy to refer my friends your way." (Referring to our Hooded Monster Towels.) Customer feedback from Lisa, Bend, OR, September 18, 2006 "I love your store. I have a three-year old boy and another baby on the way, and I am so excited to have found your great site. My introduction to parenthood three years ago included an instant aversion to the tons of corporate-sponsored merchandise out there for kids. Almost everything from shoes to sippy cups are covered in some cartoon that has been over-researched and underdrawn then forcefed to my kid. Your store is like finding a small, sane friend amidst all that." Customer feedback from Michelle, Barrington, RI, September 13, 2006 "We love this site. Love the stuff. Love the blog. Mahar Drygoods offers an imaginative and engaging selection of handmade goodies that could easily be the inventory from the crafts fair of your dreams: baby booties knit to look like high top sneakers (or cowboy boots, Mary Janes, even the earthy sock-with-sandal look); vintage aprons; unique blankets and pillows; cuddly Woolyhoodwinks creatures; tee shirts that feature snap-on, switchable felt appliqués; adorable hair clips and toys (including a play food brown bag lunch and monster finger puppets); hand carved wooden dolls; and a collection of unusual craft kits and books. Whether your tot can't tear himself away from the easel or the slide, he's bound to be inspired by the creations of these talented folks. And you'll be inspired by the ease of finding them all in one place. Because let's face it, who's got time for a crafts fair?"
Urban Baby, June 14, 2006 "I just wanted to write and let you know that you have made me cry with tears of expectant mother joy this morning. Your offerings are so beautiful and classic and remind me of when I was a child. I am sending your link to everyone I know so they will know where to outfit my little critter when it comes to baby shower time!!! Cheers to you!" "I received the booties today. They are absolutely beautiful and wonderful. I really appreciate the solid and detailed craftsmanship of them, they are so nice, and look so much like boots. They even have the curves and the lines that match perfectly the style of real boots. I can't WAIT to give these to my friend, I'm sure she'll just perish from cuteness. Also, I loved how you had them all wrapped up in brown butcher paper and tied with string. It seems very fitting with the whole sort of vintage look and feel of your website, which is also amazing. I really enjoyed buying from you, the whole process was easy, and I appreciate your quick response. I look forward to ordering from Mahar Drygoods again in the future." I've hooked up with so many incredible artists---I even purchased my first 'collectable' - a Jen Corace original from an exhibit in Philly. Your site is pure magic. I've contacted everyone I know to spread the word. You have my loyality forever!" Customer feedback from Denise, Tacoma, WA, April 26, 2006Cool Mom Picks, April 16, 2006 "Thank you so much for getting my order to me so quickly! The suitcase is even cuter than it looks online, The stickers look great on it. I actually bought the suitcase for my son (being that green is his favorite color) and the bows for my daughter to wear to a party Saturday but...I love it too much to give up." The Hippest Kid, April 13, 2006 ![]() Cool Mom Picks, April 11, 2006 "This is so cute we can’t even stand it. Things are so much cuter now than when we had babies—no fair! So much to coo over, so much to covet. Like Mahar Drygoods. They feature vintage and artisan-crafted goods for kids. All of the items you’ll find at Mahar Drygoods are created in the homes and studios of artists, designers and crafters (many of who are based in the Pacific Northwest!) who are thrilled to be sharing their talents with you and the little people in your life. Based on a 1930s children’s bookplate, the site features illustrations by Rhode Island artist Jen Corace...and like all of their products, is well-designed with a nostalgic bent and a nod to modernity." Portland Picks, April 7, 2006
"That is it! You have sealed the deal for me. I just received my order today (that was super fast shipping!) and I am thoroughly impressed. The packaging was perfect. The 'postcard' was so cute, I even liked the little button. All those little touches definitely shows that you put your customers first and it shows that you care about your products. I will be recommending your site to everyone I know!" Customer feedback from Angelica, Washington, D.C., March 29, 2006"...Mahar Drygoods, a wonderful store that features a variety of gifts, clothing and toys all made by talented artisans. Everything here is handmade and many of the items are in limited quantities. It's a great place to find an unusual and special gift for a favorite child."
"Mahar Drygoods is one of the most stunning baby websites I've seen in a long time. Browsing through the site, I feel like I've been transported back to the 1930's (if the internet had existed back then). The site evokes a wonderfully retro mood. Owner Robert Mahar has selected truly special products for his collection. The toys and crafts are whimsical and unusual, and you won't find them anywhere else. I'm currently digging the soft breakfast foods (shown), but there is plenty to drool over. Any one of the activity kits would be fabulous for family time. The room decor (such as the Snappy Animal Pillows) is delightful. The aprons are cute and practical. If one-of-a-kind baby gifts appeal to you, be sure to check out Mahar Drygoods."
