MDG Artist Profile: Cathy of California

picture name

Cathy of California (aka Cathy Callahan) was raised by a super crafty mom and her projects are based on crafts she made as a little girl, as well as ideas she find in her collection of vintage craft and design books from the 1960s and ’70s. We also love that she’s a window dresser and tend to think of her as our own crafty Rhoda. We’re thrilled to be offering a variety of Cathy’s cupcake toppers in our Party Decorations Department. Thank you to Cathy for taking the time to share a little about her life and work!

1. Were you interested in arts and crafts as a kid?

Yes totally! My mom was super crafty and I was taught all of the necessary crafty skills at a very young age. I luckily grew up at a time when sewing was still offered in school. In an effort to be more progressive my junior high school even offered shop classes for girls which of course I had to sigh up
for.

What’s the first thing you remember creating?

My dad would give me little scraps of wood leftover from his projects that I would piece together to make into little sculptures. He would help my glue and nail them together.

2. Tell us about your home life.

I live in Silver Lake with my boyfriend + cat (named Mrs. Peel after the character from “The Avengers”). We don’t have any kids but lots of my friends do so I can be an “Auntie” to them.

3. When and where do you craft/create/design?

I live in kind of a small house so I have a big folding table that I set up in my living room when I make stuff. Everything usually spills over to the dining table and the floor and the couch and even another
folding table.

I am a freelance window dresser, I also do merchandising for small boutiques and product styling. I’ve been pretty good about balancing both but lately it seems that the crafty side is starting to gain momentum

4. Did you collect anything as a kid?

I just loved gift shops as a kid, especially when my family traveled and went to places like Disneyland or Knott’s Berry Farm. I was allowed to spend my allowance on souvenirs -like snow domes - I also really liked ceramic piggy banks and little glass animals.

Do you collect anything now as an adult?

Lots of stuff - all I can say is thank goodness for eBay! I love mid century studio pottery, Edith Heath dinnerware and Enid Collins handbags. And the there is my ever growing collection of 60s + 70s craft and design books and magazines which are the basis for my blog.

5. What were your favorite toy and your favorite book when you were a kid?

I was a tomboy until i entered elementary school so I played in the mud alot. I then discovered Barbie and there was no turning back. No one favorite book that I remember. But during a recent thifting adventure I found a copy of a “Peanuts” book that I had as a kid. In looking the design and colors (hot pink, yellow ochre, orange) used in the book I can tell you for sure that book was a major influence on me.

6. Who encourages you in your artistic pursuits?

I have made so many friends at the craft shows and through my blog
and they so supportive and inspirational.

Who or what inspires you to continue creating?

I do have a few “muses” and I think I have found them in the pages of my vintage craft books. I really had no intent when I started making crafts again a couple of years ago. It all just came out of me. Then a good friend pointed out that my crafts reminded her of a particular series of craft books (that I had never heard of) from the 60s + 70s. I then tracked them down and as I looked at them I discovered that these books were most likely what inspired my mom in her crafts. So you could probably say this discovery is what kick started my current crafty pursuits.

Following are a few of Cathy’s Flickr photos with images of her studio/work space and craft shows.
